Is it possible to love someone who isn't real?

My Azzii unit was standard equipment for a deep space voyage. They gave her a human skin and a female voice because it was supposed to make a more congenial experience for male voyagers. I never thought of her as female. She was an android. I needed her help for heavy lifting and analyzing data. She'd been my only companion since my copilot had fallen into that crevasse on Rox's World III. We watched old movies and played cards. She was quiet, efficient, and had an android's quirky understanding of human culture. I had never activated her personality program or special features.

But when I entered the airlock and saw her floating in the beam from an alien ship that had been hanging just beyond my shields, my heart missed a beat and all I could think was that they damned well better not hurt "her".

They had dropped their shields to grab her.
I hit the pulse switch and sent a power surge through the hull of the ship that hit them like an series of atom bombs. The alien ship was blown away from mine.

She laid on the floor not moving, no fans running, no lights flashing, no friendly little sensor beeps, all her read-outs blank. I got her to sickbay and into the cyber chamber.
She looked like a broken doll, which I guess was what she was. I sat there for 3 rotations and watched for any sign of activity. It was the longest three days I ever spent. After 72 hours she turned her head and looked at me and I swear she smiled.

Do I love her? Twisted as it may be, yes I do. Does she love me? Don't be stupid. She's an android.
