Some folks in SL still haven't discovered Materials and Advanced Lighting.
Materials are complex textures that some designers add to their creations. Depending on the skill of the creator, Advanced Lighting can make things look more dimensional and richer, or can make things look like they're made of plastic (a look I really don't care for when it comes to hair or most clothing ;)
Try toggling Advanced Lighting on and off in your graphics preferences to see what it does for you! No one else will be affected by your setting, so they may not be able to see the detail in some of the things you use unless you let them know they need to turn on Advanced Lighting.
