In the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a Green Knight appears before Arthur's court during a Christmas feast holding a bough of holly in one hand and a battle axe in the other. The knight issues a challenge: he will allow a man to strike him once with his axe, with the condition that the Green Knight will return the blow the next year. Arthur accepts the challenge, but Gawain takes his place and decapitates the Green Knight, who laughs, retrieves his head, reattaches it and tells Gawain to meet him at the Green Chapel in a year and a day.
After many adventures testing not only his courage, but his morality and tenacity, the two warriors meet at the appointed time. Gawain submits to the Green Knight, who does not kill him, and Gawain is richly rewarded.
Modern folklorists have interpreted the story not only as the Hero's Journey, but as a medieval homage to the nature cycle which allows plants to be cut down and rise again. They say that the story reminds us on a visceral level that plants control the fate of humankind and need to be respected.
